Part 2

Part 2 In which we learn more of our hero's daunting mission, are told of his misgivings and doubts, but do not find it in our hearts to offer him a single shred of human sympathy.

I admit that at first I wasn't thrilled with the prospect of surveying several of the Caribbean's newest all-inclusive resorts and immersing myself in each of their respective experiences. Sure, it might seem like a plum assignment - visit the best luxury, spa and free-for-all resorts where one price entitles you to eat, drink, dance, dive, sail, ski, sun, sauna, swim, lounge and laze to your heart's, belly's and libido's content. But the idea of walled-in resorts, limited to one property's choice of food and activities and mingling with only their guests and staff, sounded confining, restrictive, even boring. Still, I knew this kind of vacation must have something going for it.

All-inclusive resorts are a Caribbean growth industry and an increasing number of people are eager to pay up front for the benefit of never having to fork over another dime, not even for tips. The trend for providing more and more and more has led from the original concept of a room, a meal plan and a few activities, to all-out competition among resorts to give their guests an escalating embarrassment of riches. And, as I was to discover, all-inclusives are far from restrictive. In fact, the resorts I visited provided me the most liberating, stress-free vacations I've ever had, vacations where I was free to pick up the phone at 2 a.

m. and order champagne and strawberries, free to eat three lobsters at a sitting, to sit in a eucalyptus sauna until I smelled like a koala bear's belch or wallow at a pool bar until my butt wrinkled. And at the adults-only resort, I was free to do things that would make Hugh Hefner chew off his own rabbit's foot. All this in a safe, secure, relaxed atmosphere where I never had to carry a wallet, figure out how to change money, wander the streets for a cab or wonder where my next meal would be.

All-inclusives may not be the best way to go if you're looking for mind-expanding exotic travel, but for pure, no-brainer vacations, they can't be beat. Yes, I became an all-inclusive convert. More Posted online 06/20/00.
